Homemade/Handmade Gifts

So it's coming up to somebody's bithday or some sort of celebration, and you want to give somebody a gift. If you're tired of doing the usual and just buying someone a present, why not make it yourself? This is much more personal, cheap and fun.

By doing this you can even teach yourself a few skills along the way and maybe pick up a few new hobbies. In this hub we'll be going over knitting, jewelry making, a bit of chemistry and a few more things.

It can be very difficult to give someone a present they'll love if money is tight and you're not quite sure what to get them, so read on to get some inspiration for a gift that will bring a smile to their face.

Clothing (Sweaters, socks, hats)

Woolen clothing is really coming back in to fashion, so if you're looking to knit someone a gift then this is the perfect time to do it. Knitting can be pretty simple once you get the the basics, but if you want a little help then I suggest you visit The Knitting Site.

Many of the big stores are offering more knitted products this year, so you can give your loved ones a great gift which isn't totally lame.

Socks are a pretty traditional gift for christmas, and are normally supplied by somebody's grandparents or a random distant relative. Even so, a nice pair of wooly socks might be much appreciated through the cold winter. The same for a hat, although I suggest you put more thought in to the design of this as unlike socks, it'll actually be on display. As for sweaters/jumpers, I'd only suggest making one of these if you're a pretty skilled knitter and you're looking to really impress someone.

Bath Products (Bath bombs, soap, bubble bath)

Making some lovely smelling bathing products is a really great idea for a homemade gift. Not only can it allow your loved ones to enjoy some sweet-smelling relaxation, but you can also decorate them in any way you want which can be a lot of fun.

This is a good thing to make with your kids, as they have a lot of fun mixing together the different ingredients and making some pretty packaging for the final product.

Making bath bombs can be a pretty lengthy process, and in order to stop myself filling the page with all the things you need to do, I've found a great guide on how to make bath bombs. Soap making is the same, so I've provided a soap making tutorial. And yes, you guessed it, a tutorial on how to make bubble bath.

Making Jewelry (Necklaces and bracelets)

This might be a bit of a step too far for beginners, but if you're already pretty handy with wire and beads, then this could be a great idea for you.

More and more people are making their own jewelry now, for a number of reasons. Partially because people just don't have as much money as before, and also because it allows you to create something very personal, while learning a whole new and exciting skill.

There are only a few things you need if you're planning to make jewelry, like necklaces and bracelets, and these are:

  • Some tools
  • Wire
  • Beads
  • Creativity!

And that's about it. Obviously, this is more likely to be directed at a woman, as it's unlikely a man would appreciate being given a sparkly new necklace as a gift!

A few more ideas

Although the things I've suggested already are pretty good, I thought I'd come up with a few more ideas too. So here they are:

  • Chocolates
  • Photoframe
  • T-Shirt
  • A mousemat
  • Cookies
  • Candles
