Scary movies are best watched at halloween, but can be great all year round.

People have been making them for years and years, and there are some absolute classics such as frankenstein and dracula. You don't have to be a movie buff for those names to strike fear into you, which just shows how chilling some movies really are.

In recent years horror movies have become increasingly more gorey, chilling and spooky. With more use of special effects, they've become more realistic than ever before, which means they guarantee to get you checking your cupboards and sleeping with the light on.

So, I've decided what I think are the best scary movies for you to watch this year. Some of them are new releases and you may have heard of a few of them before, but whether you're a fan of zombies or ghosts, there'll definitely be something for you.

The Exorcist
The Exorcist

The Exorcist

This film was so scary that caused audiences to faint and vomit. Released in 1973, The Exorcist has continually increased in popularity.

Linda Blair plays the part of a 12 year old girl who was been possessed by the devil. The girl's mother, played by Ellen Burstyn tries many methods of removing her daughters symptoms but in the end turns to a priest, Father Karras (Jason Miller), to perform an exorcism on the girl. Many events then occur, involving Karras and the recent death of his mother and many different supernatural happenings.

The film is about 2 hours long and has an 18 certificate.

Halloween (The Films)

Although there are 11 Halloween films in total, we'll be focusing on the first one, which in some people's opinion is by far the best.

It begins with a six year old Michael Myers killing his seventeen year old sister in 1963. 15 years later Michael escapes from the mental institution he was placed in, and stalks Laurie Strode and her friends as they babysit. To find out the rest you'll just have to watch the film.

It lasts about 100 minutes and is an 18.

The Sixth Sense

This film is FREAKY. Released in 1999, it stars Bruce Willis.

Basically, a child discovers he can see ghosts and visits a psychologist who tries to help him. He tries to help them and this takes him through many terrifying events. It has a very shocking twist at the end which makes it well worth watching.

This film lasts 107 minutes, is a 15 and is incredibly disturbing.

28 Days Later

28 Days Later was released in 2002 and is a zombie movie.

A virus spreads throughout the UK and infects people, who begin to act like Zombies. The film is the story of survivors looking for somewhere safe to go.

Then follow up to this film is "28 Weeks Later" and is well worth watching.

It's an 18 and runs for 113 minutes.

The Ring

This has to be one of the scariest films ever released.

First in cinemas in 2002, it tells the story of a journalist who investigates a mysterious video tape which seems to kill everyone who watches it within a week.

It's a remake of a japanese horror film called "Ring" which was released in 1998.

This is one I'd definitely suggest you watch on halloween, but make sure you're not alone.
